October 2022 Readings (still no reviews)

We can just ignore that I didn’t read anything for the month of September, can we? For this month, I did something I usually don’t. I read spooky scary books when seasonally appropriate!

First up was Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey, which explores serial killers, childhood trauma, unreliable narration, and a haunted childhood home. Gailey failed to disappoint with dizzying levels of character introspection & internal dialogue, coupled with gut-wrenching emotions phrased as simply as possible. Can’t say that the ending came as a big twist, but it was a nice, satisfying read.

Less satisfying to read was Nothing but Blackened Teeth. It feels like a slasher fill adaptation of a Japanese horror movie, except it didn’t translate well onto the page. It was a short read, which sacrificed character development so much that I didn’t have any emotional connection, much less personal investment into the fate of anyone in there. Also, how did this little book end up with an epilogue? The audiobook was only 2.5 hours long!
